E. gigantea is a recently described, large Madagascan shrub species. It is similar to Euphorbia croizatii, but can grow multiple times larger, up to six meters tall, with large purple-red and yellow mottled cyathia. Having only been recently described, it's quite rare in cultivation, and primarily found in a few European collections. I believe we are the first to grow this species from seed in the United States.
As with most Madagascan species, Euphorbia gigantea is best grown in a bit of shade, but can handle heat well. We've experimented with growing this species outdoors in full sun, which it seems to do well in after being acclimated into the harsher environment.
We grow Euphorbia gigantea from seed from two locales within Madagascar, Amboasary and Ranopiso. This clone is of Amboasary provenance, though seems identical to clones from Ranopiso. A listing for the clone from Ranopiso is also available.
These are 1 year old seedlings in 2.5 inch tree pots.
The specific epithet of "gigantea" is of latin origin, meaning, well, "gigantic".
