Euphorbia micracantha
Euphorbia micracantha is a small and minutely-spined shrub native to South Africa. It currently sits within the Euphorbia stellata complex, and has been recently classified as a subspecies of Euphorbia stellata. This species has small burgundy colored cyathia which will ride up and down the stems. With time and care, it will form a small caudex as well.
While Euphorbia micracantha will readily hybridize with its closely related friends Euphorbia stellata and Euphorbia squarossa. We've often seen hybrids of this species sold as Euphorbia micracantha. Though if you look closely, you'll notice the stems are too thick, spines too large, and the cyathia more yellow-green than the easily diagnosable burgundy which Euphorbia micracantha has. Our seedlings are are true Euphorbia micracantha, not hybrids.
These are 2 year old seedlings in 2.5 inch tree pots.
The specific epithet of "micracantha" is of greek origin, meaning "tiny spines".
